"The kind of work God usually calls you to is the kind of work (a) that you need most to do and (b) that the world most needs to have done."
-Frederick Buechner inWishful Thinking (1973)

  • Youth-mentor relationships help youth prepare for and reflect on weekend sessions.
  • Mentors undergo a screening process, including references and background checks.
  • Mentors take part in an initial training session and receive support via email and the members section of this website.

To be eligible for youTheology, each participant is expected to identify a non-related adult as a local mentor and meet at least once per month with this person throughout the yearlong program. The youth-mentor relationship can be both supportive and challenging, with the primary focus being to help youth prepare for up-coming weekend sessions and reflect on their experience at previous ones.

Once youth are accepted into the program, mentors will undergo a screening process to help establish and maintain a safe and healthy environment. In addition to background checks, mentors will be asked to provide two references--one from their local church pastor and one from someone who is familiar with their work with youth.

Each year, mentors are expected to participate in a training session, held in conjunction with the youTheology orientation retreat. In addition to an overview of the program, training will focus on communication skills, generational issues, the mentor's role, and boundary and safety issues. Local mentors will receive a workbook that includes materials for weekend sessions as well as other resources to help enhance the quality of the youth-mentor relationship. Throughout the year, program staff will provide support and additional materials to local mentors via email and the youTheology website. Mentors are also expected to attend the closing session at the end of the year.
